On Wednesday 24th July the branch paid a visit to Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire.

In all 39 of us took a Coach from Port Solent to visit the Museum which houses the site of the codebreakers.

Their jobs being to decypher German codes sent during the Second World War.

The Germans used an enigma machine for sending such codes, deemed at the time, to be unbreakable. But due to the efforts of Gordon Welshman,Alan Turing and many others the codes were intercepted and broken saving thousands of lives both Military and Civilian and shortening the war by an estimated 2 years.

The Museum is very well laid out and easy to follow but in all you would need 5 to 6 hours to take it all in,allowing yourself the use of the Cafes during your visit.

The ticket issued is for 12 months so I think quite a few of our members will take advantage of that to re visit.

Most of us went on a one hour free guided tour which is a good way of getting a better insight into the workings of the site.

Everyone appeared to thoroughly enjoy the visit.

We will be using the same Coach company to transport members to the Pensioners night in September.

On Wednesday 27th March our most recent branch social activity saw us visit the D Day map room located at Southwick House near Portsmouth.

We were there a few years ago but the story is so interesting that it warrented another visit.

The currator,Richard Callaghan, gave a talk on the history of the planning involved in the D Day landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944.

The talk was enhanced by the fact that he was able to use and refer to the Map which became an intergral part of the operation.

The map still hangs in its original location on the wall of a room in Southwick House.

There were many interesting anecdotes concerning the men who took part and but for whom our lives would be very different today.

Before the talk which took place at 2pm, some of us had lunch at the adjacent restaurant at Southwick Park Golf Club all in all it was a very pleasant afternoon enjoyed by 39 0f our Members.
